Betsy Ruth Lyon Hamm, 84, passed away August 18, 2023 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS. She was born June 23, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa to Harold B. and Ruth Mercer Lyon. She grew up in Iowa and Fairway, KS. She graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1957. She attended the University of Kansas and later graduated from Washburn University. She taught English at Roosevelt Junior High, Landon Junior High and Topeka West High School, all in Topeka. She was a longtime member of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Topeka.

She is survived by three daughters: Peggy Hamm Eland, of Hoxie, KS; Amy Hamm Voorhees (Jim) of Rantoul, KS; and Kerry Hamm Johnson (Steve) of Topeka, KS. She has seven grandchildren: Brad Eland (Laura), Patrick Eland (Carly), Tom Voorhees (Morgan), Allison Voorhees Miller (Remington), Courtney Voorhees Muehlberger (Andy), Hayley Johnson, Kirsten Johnson (Zachary Ebert), and nine great grandchildren: Theo Eland, Jane Eland, Jordan Eland, Henry Voorhees, Vivianne Miller, Oliver Miller, Miles Miller, Kennedy Muehlberger, and Sydney Muehlberger.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. David’s Episcopal Church, 3916 SW 17th Ave. Topeka, KS 66604.

Service: Betsy’s favorite color was pink, so please wear pink in celebration of her life. A memorial service will be held at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 3916 SW 17th Ave., Topeka, KS at 2 pm August 26, 2023. Committal of ashes will take place in the churchyard following the service. Please join the family for a reception in the parish hall.
