Robert Lee “Bob” Meyers, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 21, 2023 in Topeka.

Bob was born on October 11, 1929 in Flandreau, SD to his parents Albert & Grace (Bullis) Meyers. Bob was an only child and spent his childhood years on his family’s farm 1 mile north and one-half mile east of Hammond KS. Bob was also baptized in Hammond, KS. His family moved to Carmel, CA when Bob was in the 7th grade. His family moved back to Hammond, KS directly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Dec 1941. Bob liked to tell the humorous story of how Pearl Harbor “saved his life” from some school bullies.

Bob graduated from Ft. Scott high school in 1947. Bob served in the Army and was a wounded veteran of the Korean War. Bob graduated from Washburn University with an Alcohol & Drug counseling degree and was the Director of the new Kirkbride alcohol and drug recovery program at the Topeka State Hospital. Bob later started the first alcohol & drug recovery program at Mennigers in Topeka, where he worked for 35 years before retiring in 1996.

Bob was a friend to Bill W and celebrated 57 years of sobriety. Bob was generous and enjoyed helping others find Bill. Attending meetings and helping others was a very big part of Bob’s life.

Bob loved automobiles, and his Suzuki automatic motorcycle. He rode his motorcycle well into his late 80’s. Bob loved popcorn and popped the best. That tradition has passed onto his son and great grandkids- movie nights with homemade popcorn.

Bob married Wilma I. Chamberlain, three children were born to this union. They later divorced. Bob married Dorothy “Dottie” McLaughlin Anderson. Bob lost Dottie to heart disease in 1989. Bob married Betty K. White Edwards on Nov 10, 1991. Bob lost Betty to cancer in 2009.

Bob was a member and Deacon of the Brookwood Covenant Church.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, son Joe Robert Meyers and step-sons Greg Anderson and Mark Anderson.

He is survived by his daughter Cynthia (John) Debo of Hudson, OH, son Jeffrey (Lillian) Meyers of Crestview, FL, step-sons J.D. Edwards of Batavia, IL, Bruce Anderson, Joplin, and Steve Anderson, Columbus, NE and 9 grandchildren; Matt Worman, Mitch Worman, Meagan Worman, all of Ohio, Jason Meyers, Chris Meyers, Stacy Nedley, all of Florida, Eric Gilbert of Edwardsville, KS, Jeff Meyers and Jack Meyers both of Topeka, KS. Bob is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren.

Bob was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend and will be dearly missed by those who loved him.
