Abdul G. Anbari died September 26, 2011, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, Topeka. He was born April 20, 1927, in Al-Amara, Iraq. He attended Cairo University in Egypt, and was a teacher in Iraq. He came to this country in 1956 and became a social worker and social work educator. A.G. received a Master of Social Work degree from Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1958. He was a social worker in Chicago, IL, 1958-1967, and a post-graduate student and instructor at the University of Chicago School of Social Work. He taught social work from 1967-1971 at St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO. and from 1971-1980 at Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. From 1980 to his retirement in 1995, he was a psychiatric social worker at Colmery O'Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Kansas.
A.G. married Lesslie J. Wagner on August 19, 1961, in Chicago. He is survived by his wife, Lesslie, Topeka; son, David L. Anbari and wife, Angel, Atlanta, Georgia; son, Alan R. Anbari, and wife, Sara, of Austin, TX; granddaughters, Leona and Julia Anbari, Atlanta; grandson, Aren Anbari, Austin; three sisters; and nephews, nieces and their families in Iraq.
Mr. Anbari was cremated. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2011, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Shelley Craig and Rev. Alden Hickman officiating. The family will meet with friends at the church following the service. Memorial gifts may be given to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 4746 SW 21st Street, Topeka, Kansas 66604, for his favorite cause, peacemaking.
