Albert M. Hearrell

Albert M. "Al" Hearrell, 90, of Topeka, died at his home August 20, 2011, surrounded by his family.

Al was born December 13, 1920, near Columbus, Kansas, to Arthur and Lydia Hearrell. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dolorise, whose excellent care over the years no doubt extended his life. He is also survived by his daughter, Iris (husband Ron Forbis) and three sons: Randy (Carla), Steve (Terri), and Robert (Vicki). In addition, he leaves 10 grandchildren: York, Zack, Colin, Amber, Kristen, and Adrienne Hearrell; Bradon, Justin, and Ryan Parsons, and Reagan Wynn; and seven great-grandchildren. His sisters Alwena Lyons of Los Angeles and Hazel Trumbell of Eugene, Oregon also survive.

As a young man, Al was an outstanding baseball player and an excellent high school and college football player. When he left college to join the Marines in 1941, he played football for the Quantico Marines team and started alongside several players who played professional football. As an adult, he was an avid bowler and greatly enjoyed being part of a competitive team.

He served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific Theater and was proud to be a Marine.

In his working life, Al was a miner, welder, and construction manager. In addition, he worked as Executive Director of the Kansas Mechanical Contractors Association prior to starting and co-owning Piping Contractors of Kansas, Inc., from which he retired in 1987. He was honored to have served as President of both the Topeka and Kansas Mechanical Contractors Associations.
Al was a kind and generous man and the many physical challenges he faced the last 25 years of his life never caused him to lose his positive attitude and sense of humor. He was happy when he was working, but he was happiest when he could do things with and for his family.

Al was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2011, at University Methodist Church, 17th & College, Topeka, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to University Methodist Church, 1621 SW College Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66604 or Midland Care Hospice Services, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, Kansas 66606.
