Alice H. Nelson, 95, Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at a local care center. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Alice was born August 4, 1916 in Geddes, SD, the daughter of James and Jennie (Knorr) Houseman. She graduated from Cheyenne High School in Cheyenne, WY in 1935.
She was employed by the National Red Cross, Ft. Warren, WY for several years and received a certificate and pin from the National Red Cross, Washington, DC, in recognition of meritorious personal service performed during World War II. She retired from the Payroll Department of USD-501 in August of 1981,
She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Topeka and a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Alice was passionate about compiling her family's genealogy in her retirement.
Alice married Harry B. Nelson on October 4, 1942 in Cheyenne, WY. He was an art teacher at Topeka High School. He died March 8, 1969.
Survivors include sons, Marc (Penny) Nelson, Kent (Jill) Nelson, all of Topeka, Dennis (Susan) Nelson, Overland Park; 7 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 5 step-great grandchildren; and brother, Walter Houseman. She was also preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
Private services will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
