Allen G. Brown, 80, Topeka, died Sunday, July 20, 2008 at Midland Hospice House with his loving family at his side.
He was born Aug. 8, 1927 in Independence, KS, the son of Malcolm V. and Marjorie L. Gormly Brown. He attended Independence High School and Junior College before joining the US Navy and serving on a LST Destroyer Escort from 1945 to 1947.
Following his discharge, Allen returned to Independence and worked for Briggs Contractors as a carpenter. After moving to Topeka, he worked for Kansas Inspection Bureau/ISO as a fire insurance inspector for 38 years, retiring in 1991.
Allen was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church, where he served on the Missions Committee, Topeka North Post #400 American Legion, and Philip Billard Post #1650 V.F.W. He also volunteered at Doorstep, Let's Help, and Habitat For Humanity.
He married Shirley Dean in 1948. They later divorced. He married Bessie Smith-Stansbury on June 14, 1968. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Deborah Roberts (Frank); two sons, David Brown (Sally) and Darren Brown (fiancée, Traci); six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Martha Masters and Annetta Wallace.
A time of remembrance and sharing with the family will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Lowman United Methodist Church, 4000 SW Drury Lane.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Inurnment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
