Allen LeRoy Zordel

February 7, 1957 — April 12, 2025

Topeka

Allen LeRoy Zordel, affectionately known as "Z," passed away on April 12, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, surrounded by family. Born on February 7, 1957, in Ransom, Kansas, Z was a dedicated father, educator and a spirited coach who left an indelible mark on his students and athletes alike.

With a career spanning more than two decades, Z made a significant impact in the community. He began his teaching and coaching journey at Dover and Mission Valley, ultimately dedicating 22 years to Most Pure Heart of Mary as a PE teacher for kindergarten through eighth graders, where he also served as Athletic Director. His coaching prowess was evident as he guided athletes at Hayden Highschool, Dover, and Most Pure Heart of Mary. Z coached baseball, basketball, track and football. In the summer, he was a familiar face at Sports Center in Topeka mowing and helping with go-karts.

Z's education was just as commendable as his career. He graduated from Ransom High School in 1975, followed by Dodge City Community College in 1977, and earned his degree from Fort Hays State in 1979. He cherished his school days, where he not only excelled in various sports but also built lifelong friendships.

Z was known for his loyalty, compassion, and driven nature. He adored his daughter and was deeply involved in every aspect of Taylor's life. One of his proudest accomplishments was watching Taylor coach softball at Washburn University. Whether traveling, coaching, or avidly cheering from the sidelines, Z was always there, embodying the spirit of a supportive father.

Outside of his teaching career, Z had a wide array of interests. He was an avid fisherman, a devoted fan of the KU Jayhawks and the Green Bay Packers, and relished enjoying a cold red beer with liver and gizzards. Those who knew him would often spot him in his favorite shorts and KU basketball shirts.

Z had a remarkable ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him. He loved to share a good joke and would want to leave everyone with one last chuckle: “What do you call a fish with no eyes? Fsssssssh.”

He is survived by his beloved daughter, Taylor (Zach Sanford) Zordel; loving siblings Tami (Vance) DuBois, Julie Zordel, and Michael (Brenda) Zordel; many cherished nieces and nephews; and Shari Sommer, Camryn Huffman, and Cade Boswell. Though mourned deeply, Z's spirit will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched with his dedication, humor, and love.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Esther Zordel. Z was one-of-a-kind, loved by all, and his joy, humor and unwavering support will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
