Alton Werner
Alton "Al" A. Werner was born on May 26, 1917 in Adams, NE and departed this life on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Midland Care Facility in Topeka, KS. He was 92 years of age.
Surviving Al are: his wife, Virginia of Topeka, one son, Joe Werner of Long Beach, CA and two stepchildren: Linda Lee Sorensen of MO and Mark Sorenson of California
Al was also blessed with four grandchildren, Jason Werner of NC, Shelly Werner of NY, Erik Werner of WI, Ryan Werner of CA and one great-grandson, JT Werner, Jr. of NC.
Also surviving Al are three nieces, Susan Harris, Jan Gerber and LeeAnn Tyree and two nephews, Kirk Tyree and Kent Sappenfield.
His parents, Walter and Meta Werner and two sisters, (a twin) Althea Sappenfield and Ardell Tyree, preceded Al in death. Walter founded the Topeka Bible Church and Topeka Bible Store.
Al was an All American Basketball player for the University of Nebraska. After college, Al was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and Kelly Springfield collectively for over 40 years and retired as personnel director. Al loved hunting, fishing and was an avid golfer. He was also a member of the Shrine's Organization.
Al had a sense of humor and a remarkable memory. He was very kind, loving, and caring to all. Al will be greatly missed by his loving family and dear friends.
Memorial Service will be held on March 13, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 3033 SW Mac Vicar, Topeka, KS 66611. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: First Baptist Church of Topeka or to the Shrine Children's Fund, c/o Arab Temple, 1305 S. Kansas Avenue, Topeka, KS 66612.
