Alvis H. Stallard

Alvis H. Stallard passed away peacefully at Hope West Hospice Care center on November 29 at the age of 83.

Al was born March 15, 1933 and grew up in the farmlands around Perry, Kansas. He was a proud Jayhawk, graduating from Kansas University in 1955. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956 where he was an instructor in photo-radar intelligence.

In 1957, he married Sara Lou West and they settled in Topeka, Kansas. They moved to Grand Junction, Colorado in 2013 to be closer to their daughter.

After leaving the Air Force in 1959, he took a job with the Kansas Department of Transportation where he worked as an Environmental Geologist until his retirement in 1993. He was also adjunct professor of geology at Washburn University for forty years.

Outside of work, Al was a member of the Auburn-Washburn School District Board of Education, serving as president for two years and was a co-founder of the Ken Berry Baseball League in Topeka. He also served on several other boards, including being a member of the Technical Advisory Panel for the National Research Council, and a member of the Technical Advisory Committee for the Department of Transportation. He authored numerous papers on Photogrammetery, Remote Sensing, and Environment. He loved golf, racquetball, bridge, reading, and was an ardent student of Civil War history.

He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Lou Stallard; a daughter, Debbie King (Timothy) of Grand Junction, Colorado; two sons, Steve Stallard (Jill) of Ft. Worth, Texas; and Tim Stallard (Leslie) of Lawrence, Kansas; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brother Dave and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Rebekah Joy King (1990-2010).

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a. m. on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Topeka Bible Church, 1101 SW Mulvane. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MADD or Easter Seals Capper Foundation.
