ANTHONY P. COX
Capt. Anthony Phillip "Tony" Cox, 44, of Topeka, a 21-year veteran of the Topeka Fire Department, died Monday, August 13, 2007, after battling a fire in an apartment complex in southwest Topeka.
He was born Jan. 2, 1963 in Mobile, Alabama, the son of SFC Walter Phillip Cox, Jr. and Iva Lou Morgan Cox.
He graduated from Topeka West High School and attended
Washburn University.
Tony began his career with Mission Township Fire Department. He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters, Local 83, and was assigned to Fire Station Number 8 at 2700 SW Fairlawn Road. He was a Haz-Mat Tech Instructor for the State Fire Marshall's office. Tony also worked for American Medical Response ambulance service as an EMT I/D.
Tony and Karrie Youngbear were married on Sept. 17, 2006 in Galveston, Texas. She survives and is expecting their child in December.
Other survivors include three children, Derek Cox, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in San Diego, CA, Morgan Cox, and Baylee Cox, both in Topeka and the baby due in December; his mother, Iva Lou Cox; two sisters, Kelly Drummond and Dotty Karnowski, all of Topeka.
He was preceded in death by his father, his youngest sister, Shelby Cox-Scott, and a brother, Daniel Brian Cox.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Monday at the Kansas Expocentre. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Tony will lie in state from noon to 9:00 p.m. Saturday and from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, where the family will receive friends from noon to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
