Anthony Shields "Tony" Randall, 48, Topeka, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2014 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Tony was born April 16, 1966 in Springfield, MO, the son of Sheila (Randall) Robles. Following Sheila's death when Tony was 6 years old he was adopted by his uncle and aunt, Gene and Barbara (Brake) Randall, Sr. He graduated from Kickapoo High School and Southwest Missouri State University, both in Springfield. He received his Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University.
He was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church, the Topeka Evening Sertoma Club and the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge in Iraq. He joined the Kansas Army National Guard in 1997 and was currently a Lt. Colonel serving as the Chief of the Environmental Management Branch. He was deployed to Iraq in 2008 with the 287th Sustainment Brigade and received the Bronze Star. In 2005 while commander of the 102nd Military History Detachment, he lead a team to the Hurricane Katrina aftermath to document the National Guard's role in recovery and rebuilding. During Tony's career in the environmental office for the Guard, he and the staff received many accolades for their efforts to preserve and protect the Kansas landscape and cultural environments including national attention for their excellence and was awarded the Secretary of the Army Environmental Award.
The brain cancer that took him did not define who he was. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, humor and strength. Tony was a very kind, caring, intelligent person who was always willing to go the "extra mile" for anyone. He never met a challenge he didn't put 100 percent of his energy into overcoming. He loved his family, country and God.
Many people did not realize Tony had cancer and that is exactly how he wanted it. He had many adventures in his life and lived it to the fullest, even after his diagnosis. Those who knew him will strive to hold his love of life, sense of adventure, humor, kindness and service close to their hearts in the coming days, months and years.
Tony married Jenalea Linn on Oct. 20, 2007 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Matthew Randall, Tecumseh; mother Barbara Randall, Springfield; brothers, Gene (Pat) Randall, Bixby, OK, Dana Randall, Springfield, Don Randall, Beverly Hills, CA, and Chris Randall, New York City, NY. His father preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at St. David's Episcopal Church. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2014 at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Springfield. Tony will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road, after 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2014 with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Great Overland Station Veterans Memorial or the American Cancer Society.
