Arlan Kious, 84, of Topeka, passed away June 3, 2016. He was born on July 10, 1931 in the Oakland community to George Washington and Maye Cleone Cline Kious. He was raised in Topeka and attended public schools. Arlan graduated from Topeka High School in 1949 and earned his Associates degree from Pittsburg State in 1993. In 1950 he went to work for Meyers Yearbook Company as a pressman. He negotiated city-wide contracts for the Printer's Union of Topeka in the 1950s.
In the mid 1960's, he and John Ogle formed Central OK Printing and remained partners until 1970. Arlan then took the first QuickPrint franchise to the southwest in Albuquerque, NM. He relocated back to Topeka in 1982. He served as a consultant to a variety of printing businesses until 1990 at which time he began teaching desktop publishing at the women's prison in Topeka until this program ended in 1993. He then worked for Stormont-Vail in the print shop until his retirement in 1994.
He first married Stella Smith in 1950; they had three sons. They were divorced in 1980. He then married Barbara Finch in 1989 at Topeka, Kansas. He is survived by his wife and his blended family: Brian Kious of Albuquerque, NM, Dan Kious of Topeka, Donald Finch of Topeka, Robert Finch of Marion, OH, and Kerry Finch of Kansas City, MO; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren with a third expected soon. He is preceded in death by his son Tim Kious, his brother Don Kious and his first wife Stella.
He was a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church and St. David's Episcopal Church (both in Topeka). He served as a lay minister at St. David's and the Episcopal church at Holton. He joined Crestview United Methodist Church with Barbara after their marriage.
He was an avid golfer and liked to putter around in his yard. He also enjoyed fishing, spending time with his family, and playing with his dog, Misty.
Memorial services to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service from 3-5PM.
