Arthur H. "Art" Harms, Jr. passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2008. He was born on May 5, 1941 in Knob Noster, MO the son of Mildred L. (Harrington) and Arthur H. Harms.
He graduated from Chilhowee High School in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1964 with the military police, as a NIKE missile guard dog handler.
Art married Mary Rae Mead on October 5, 1963 in Leavenworth, KS. They relocated to Topeka and he began employment with the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Distribution Center that same year, retiring in 2000 with 37 years of service. In 1973, he built a home in Maple Hill, KS where he served on the city council; played fast pitch softball; and coached little league baseball and girl's softball. He was a trained Emergency Medical Technician; an active Boy Scoutmaster; a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary's, KS; and a talented carpenter and mechanic. He also enjoyed amateur photography, canoeing and attending his children's school and sporting events.
He is survived by his former wife, Mary Rae Harms, Topeka; two daughters, Lisa Feyh and husband, Marc, Olathe, KS and Deana Harms, Salida, CO; and a son, Chad Harms and wife, Deanna, Wichita, KS; three sisters, Marva Reven, Eldon, MO; Judy Headrick, Lacoma, MO; and Vivian Godfrey, Harrisonville, MO; three granddaughters, Erin and Kimberlee Feyh, Olathe, KS; and Maura Harms, Wichita, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Barbara Arechigo.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Maple Hill, KS. Art will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road after 5:00 p.m. on Friday and the rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.
