Barbara Brubaker

Barbara Jane Brubaker, 68, of Topeka, surrounded by her family, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005 at her home. She was a five year survivor of a liver transplant.
She was born Aug. 8, 1936 in Republic County, KS, the daughter of Leonard and Dorothy Hall Neal. She graduated from Belleville High School in 1954 and from Grace Hospital School of Nursing, Hutchinson, in 1957.
She came to Topeka in 1957, and worked as a registered nurse for several local hospitals before retiring in 1994.
She was an active member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church, where she taught children's Sunday School classes for over 20 years, started the Staff Parish Nurse Program, the Young Mothers Support Group, and was a member of the Women's Circle group and Missionary Work Area. She also created a Multiple Sclerosis support group, and had been active in Girl Scouts and 4-H. She served as secretary of the Hi-Crest Neighborhood Improvement Association, and was involved in many other organizations.
She married Dewey Brubaker on Nov. 28, 1957 in Belleville.
Barbara is survived by her husband, four daughters-Jayme McKinney and husband Craig, Topeka, Nancy Smith and husband Kevin, Wichita, Cindy McCrary and husband Troy, Berryton, Carla Warner and husband Gary, Halstead; two brothers, Jack Neal, Denver,CO, Jim Neal and wife Carolyn, Reynolds, NE, eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Norma Yurcina and Alberta "Bertie" McElroy and a granddaughter, Emma Warner.
Services will be held 10:00 am Saturday at Highland Park United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Brubaker will lie in state Friday from noon to 4 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 29th & Minnesota, and after 5 p.m. at the church where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 SE Michigan, Topeka 66605, or to Midland Hospice Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka 66606. Barbara's family would also like for everyone to consider organ donation.
