Barbara J. Heath, 86, of Topeka, formerly of Carbondale, Kansas, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, January 7, 2017. She was born October 11, 1930, in Carbondale, Kansas, the daughter of Alfred E. and Emma (Purdy) Waetzig. She was raised in Carbondale and graduated from Carbondale High School in 1949.
Barbara was a homemaker first and foremost, but after her kids were raised, she worked as a cook at several schools and nursing homes in Topeka. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, of Topeka.
Barbara married Charles W. Higgins on September 4, 1949 at Topeka. He preceded her in death. She married Delbert T. Heath on June 14, 1975 at Topeka. He also preceded her in death. Barbara is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Boling (Don) of Topeka; son, Chuck Higgins (Lori) of Topeka, 12 Grandkids; 23 great-grandkids; brother, Charles Waetzig and sisters, Virginia Downs, Alice Bernhardt, Emma June Onnen, Peggy Owens and Carol Ashwill. She was preceded in death by her parents; 8 siblings; husband, Charles Higgins and husband, Delbert Heath; daughter, Carla J. Higgins and daughter, Shelley K. O'Leary.
Barbara enjoyed playing the piano and singing in the church for many years, watching KU Basketball and most of all spending time with her family.
Barbara was cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, January 21, 2017, at New Hope United Methodist Church, 2915 SW 8th Ave. in Topeka. Private family inurnment will be at Carbondale Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope UMC Ministry Fund, 2915 SW 8th Ave. Topeka, KS 66606.
