Barbara Jean Larson

Barbara Jean Larson, 87, Topeka, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
Barbara was born July 5, 1931, to Harry A. and Ruth B. (Robson) Oldweiler and grew up on a farm southeast of Mayetta. She graduated from Mayetta High School and attended Washburn University in Topeka, where she met Bobby D. Larson of Abilene, Kansas. They were married in Mayetta Oct. 2, 1950, four days before Bobby reported for duty with the U.S. Army for the Korean War.
Barbara was a homemaker and the mother of two sons. She began work for the State of Kansas in 1960 and worked in administration for the Kansas State Department of Education, retiring in May 1993.
She was an active member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church for more than 60 years and was involved in the church's Ladies Circle. Barbara was actively involved with her sons in Cub Scouts, Boys Scouts, the Highland Park Optimists, and other organizations.
She was a member of the Topeka Genealogical Society, American Business Women's Association, and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Barbara loved potato chips and cola, crossword puzzles, knitting and dabbled in other hobbies such as making mosaics and colorizing photographs. She later took up square dancing and line dancing. After her retirement, she and Bobby traveled for pleasure and to pursue genealogical leads. She made several trips to Salt Lake City to search the extensive genealogy records compiled by the Mormon church.
Barbara is survived by her brother Harry E. (Jeanne) Oldweiler, Columbia, Missouri; her sons David (Karen) Larson, Silver Lake; and Stephen (Rebecca) Larson, Topeka; grandchildren Matt, Erika, Micah, Ben and Lydia; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 11, 2019, at the Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 SE Michigan Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66605 where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Interment will follow in Mayetta Cemetery.
