Barbara Ann Thompson

May 1, 1946 — January 26, 2021

Barbara Ann Thompson, 74, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021.

She was born May 1, 1946, in Smithville, Missouri the daughter of Ward Leach and Helen Rausch.

Barbara was a Registered ER Nurse for Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri specializing in trauma for many years. She then went on to work part-time caring for seniors in nursing homes in Topeka, Kansas and then retired fully to relax and enjoy time with family.

In 1967 Barbara married Marvin Thompson in Rulo, Nebraska. He preceded her in death on December 23, 1983. Survivors include sons, Ronald (Paulette) Wieland, David Wieland, Cecil Wieland and John (Kathy) Thompson; Joel (Dee) Thompson, Jeff (Dawn) Thompson, all of Topeka; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister, Suzy Harrelson of Seymour, Missouri and her brother, Larry (Michelle) Leach of Eudora.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Jan Leach and two sons, Jerry Thompson and Jason Thompson.

Barbara enjoyed many things but had a particular knack for gardening. She could make anything grow and loved to be surrounded by plants. She loved to watch the butterflies and hummingbirds buzz around the flowers. Her favorite flower was the Bird of Paradise which matched her personality - bold, strong and a beauty that stood out among the rest. Barbara enjoyed working on puzzle books, doing crafts and was a very talented sketch artist - a trait she passed down to her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She kept a well-balanced diet of her favorite foods – candy and fresh veggies. Whenever you had a sweet tooth you could count on Barbara to have a hidden stash of Red Vines, Oreos or Milky Ways. Barbara loved animals, particularly roosters and her beloved terrier, Stickers. Her favorite movie was Dancing with Wolves and anytime you mentioned Kevin Costner you were sure to see a little blush come on. She would sing Garth Brooks and Elvis at the top of her lungs and never cared who was listening.

Most of all, Barbara loved her family and watching it grow. She made sure that life always had a layer of fun woven in and always told her family how much she loved them.

Honoring her request, cremation is planned. A memorial ceremony will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 11, 2021 at the Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd., Topeka, KS.
