Bernadine Garwood, 84, of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at her home. She was born on April 16, 1924 in Topeka, the daughter of Albert and Bertha Murphy Nordstrom. She lived most of her life in the Topeka area. She graduated from Berryton Rural High School in 1942. She was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad for nine years after graduating from high school. She also was a childcare provider in the Berryton community for many years. She is most reknowed for her afghan craftmanship. Bernadine was a member of Berryton United Methodist Church where she was active with the United Methodist Women and the Golden Times. She was also a member of the Sesame Club, the Wagoneers Camping Club and the Riverside 4H Club. Bernadine married H. Dean Garwood on May 25, 1946 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on May 7, 2004. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer and Clayton Nordstrom. Survivors include one son, Darrell Dean (Donna) Garwood of Topeka, three daughters, Albertha "Albie" (Tom) Morrison of Topeka, Carla Jean (Tom) Bacon of Tecumseh, Carrie Bell of Topeka, six grandsons , one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Berryton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Lynn Creek Cemetery. Bernadine will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel.
