Bernard "Bernie" Hammel, 82, Lecompton, passed away on Friday, March 26, 2010, at Select Specialty Hospital.
Bernie was born November 15, 1927 in St. George, KS, the son of George and Anna (O'Brian) Hammel. He graduated from St. George High School and served in the U.S. Navy for five years.
He was a truck driver for Schwerman Trucking Company in Bonner Springs, KS, retiring after 25 years of service.
He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Topeka.
Bernie married Doris Teske on August 7, 1955. She died December 11, 2008. Survivors include daughters, Cheryl (John) Charleston, Nancy (Steve) Pembleton; sons, Dean (Debbie) Falk and Bradley (Glenda) Hammel; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; brothers, Fred (Carol) Hubbard, Harold Gore, Larry Davis; and sister, Maxine Davis. He was also preceded in death by a brother, David Bradley.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 29, 2010 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Luke's Lutheran North Cemetery in Wheaton, Kansas. Bernie will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
