Bethany Ann Willetts, born on May 30, 1933, in Pasadena, California, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and will be remembered fondly by her family and friends for her vibrant spirit and generous heart.
Bethany enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as an manager at the Capri motel in Joplin, Missouri. Her work there allowed her to connect deeply with guests and colleagues, forging friendships that lasted years. Her warmth and friendly demeanor made her a familiar face for many who visited the hotel. In addition to her hospitality career, Bethany was a passionate antique dealer, spending countless hours collecting everything from old magazine advertisements to exquisite jewelry. Her love for antiques was a way for her to meet new people and share her passions.
Later in life, Bethany prioritized connecting with her daughters, which brought her immense joy and satisfaction. She cherished her time spent at the Lawrence Antique Mall, where like-minded individuals gathered to share stories and discover hidden treasures. Theater was another passion, as she greatly enjoyed providing costume assistance to the local theater department, further fueling her creative spirit.
Bethany was a woman of many hobbies and interests. An avid crafter and voracious reader, she found solace in both fiction and nonfiction, with a special fondness for the works of Irving Stone. Her adventurous spirit led her to explore second-hand shops and rummage sales, where she cherished the thrill of the hunt for unique items.
Educated at Missouri Southern State College, where she pursued a degree in Business in her 50s, Bethany exemplified a strong and independent woman who was not afraid to seek new challenges. Her life was defined by a boisterous sense of humor and an outgoing personality; she did not know a stranger and spoke to everyone, selflessly helping others whenever she could.
Bethany is survived by her son John Willetts, daughters Jenny Rossow and Bethany Jean Bowen, son Lyle Willetts, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom carry her legacy forward. She was preceded in death by her son, Willis Smith, her father Leroy Fain Jones, and her mother Dorothy Weld.
Bethany Ann Willetts leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories woven with laughter, love, and kindness. Her remarkable life serves as an inspiration to all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.
