Betty Jean Howbert, 91, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2017.
She was born May 21, 1925 on a farm southeast of Wetmore, KS, the daughter of Homer J. and Mabel Mell (McQueen) Nissen. Her mother died when she was less than three years old and she lived with her grandparents, Clark and Effie McQueen, until her father remarried when she was seven years old and the family moved to Topeka.
Betty attended school in Wetmore and Topeka and was a 1943 graduate of Topeka High School. After high school she attended Strickler's Business College. Betty worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone before her marriage and after her children were grown she went to work for Josten's Yearbook Co., retiring in 1984 after nineteen years of service.
Betty married Wayne W. Howbert on August 30, 1947. Together they enjoyed over 69 years of marriage.
She was fond of traveling, camping, boating, bowling, playing cards with friends and taking care of plants and flowers. During their travels she and her husband visited all fifty states, many several times, as well as the British Isles, western Europe, western Canada, Monterey Mexico and a cruise in the Caribbean.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Richard Nissen.
Survivors include her husband Wayne and two children, Judy Forster (Dean) of Topeka and Rick Howbert (Donna) of Chino, CA; a sister, Donna Luciano (Tom) of Alameda, CA; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Nissen of Richmond, CA; five grandchildren, Brian Forster (Laura), Kristin Forster, Courtney Smith, Sarah Howbert, and Jeremy Howbert; five great grandchildren, Kayden Smith, Kamryn Smith, Kaity Howbert, Drake Howbert and Emery Forster; and two cousins.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, April 2 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW. Wanamaker Rd. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 3, 2017 at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW. 6th Ave.
