Betty Jane Down Broom, 82, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2013.
She was born September 18, 1930 in Knox County, NE, the daughter of Jesse Edward and Carla Capitola (Edmiston) Bolin. She was a 1948 high school graduate of Lincoln, NE.
Betty and her husband Edward Down owned and operated the Audio House in Lawrence and later worked for Hallmark Cards in Lawrence. She also provided home health care for local residents of Topeka in her later years, retiring in 1998.
She was an active member of Southwest Christian Church, Topeka. She was a member of the New Beginnings Choir, Topeka.
Betty married Edward Joseph Down on April 17, 1949 in Lincoln, NE. He preceded her in death in January 13, 1978. She married Vernon Broom in April of 1998 in Salina, KS. He preceded her in death June 18, 2007. Survivors include five children, Kathleen (Milton) Benteman, Topeka, Danny (Susie) Down, Topeka, Shirley (Rick) Moore, Oakdale, CA, Tommy Down, Lincoln, IL and Rebecca Down, Topeka; Janet Broom Carter and her husband, Dana; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and three sisters, Carlene (Bob) Webb, Benton, AR, Ura (Chuck) Furry, Canyon Lake, CA and Marian Bolin, Binghamton, NY.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Bertha Bolin and Alice Sazama and two brothers, Bernard Bolin and Frank Bolin.
Betty was cremated. A victory celebration will be 11 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Southwest Christian Church, 5747 SW Huntoon, Topeka, KS 66604. Private family inurnment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, KS. Dove Cremation & Funeral Service in Topeka is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church or to the American Cancer Society, 1315 SW Arrowhead Rd, Topeka, KS 66601.
