Betty Jane Neely, 90, Palm Springs, California and long-time resident of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2012.
A loving mother, wife and grandmother, the most important thing in life for Betty was family. Betty loved travel, bridge, dancing, music and all sports, particularly following her beloved Kansas University Jayhawks. Her family and friends will miss her easy smile and the quick wit that she possessed.
Betty was born July 9, 1921 in Scammon, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Jennie (Ridley) Batten. She graduated from Columbus High School in Columbus in 1939 and attended Pittsburg State University.
She worked at Stormont Vail Hospital for five years in administration and volunteered at St. Francis Hospital for fifteen years in the surgical area.
She attended the Methodist Church in Topeka and was a member of the Topeka Country Club.
Betty married Melvin E. Neely on June 2, 1939 in Columbus, Kansas. Dr. Neely passed away in Topeka in 1979. Survivors include sons, Robert Joseph Neely, Laguna Beach, California; Richard Allen Neely, Palm Springs, California; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, William Larry Neely in 1999.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on April 26, 2012 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road; burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
The family suggest expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to National Associations for Juvenile Diabetes and ALS-Lou Gehrig Disease.
