Betty Joe Morris, 92, Topeka, passed away Monday, November 14, 2016.
Betty Joe was born July 23, 1924 in Stafford, KS. Daughter of Basil Christie and Bessie Christie (Helsel). She graduated from Pratt High School.
In the late 1940's she worked in Lawrence as Secretary to the Dean of Women at the University of Kansas. Years later she worked in the business office at Washburn University in Topeka.
Betty Joe was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught the Faithbuilder's Sunday School class. She was the Financial Secretary for the church for many years and taught a Menninger Bible Study class for 35 years. She loved playing golf competing in local and state wide tournaments up through 2016. In 2015 she was highlighted in the Topeka Capital Journal for her regular weekly participation in the Topeka Women's Golf Club at Cypress Ridge Golf Course. She was also an avid bridge player playing multiple times each week with the American Contract Bridge League and other local bridge groups.
Betty Joe married Alfred Ernest Morris on July 2, 1944 in St. Johns, KS. He survives. Other survivors include children, David (Peggy) Morris, Brentwood, TN; Beth Anne (Dennis) Brown, Plano, TX; grandchildren, Jennifer (Tim) Shuman, Julie Morris, Brian Brown; and 2 great-grandchildren, Jacob Shuman, Caitlin Shuman.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at First Baptist Church, 3033 SW MacVicar in Topeka. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening.
