Betty L. Johnson

July 20, 1921 — June 5, 2017

Betty L. Johnson, 95, of Tecumseh, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. She was born July 20, 1921 in Perry, Kansas, the daughter of Albert Ayer and Bessie (Button) Rose.

Betty graduated from Perry High School. She had resided in Topeka since 1941 and the Tecumseh area since 1962. She was employed by the American Year Book Company for 8 years and in school lunch service at Shawnee Heights High School. Betty was a member of the Tecumseh United Methodist Church, a Senior Citizen Bowling League and served in various P.T.A. offices in grade school.

Betty was very knowledgeable about many sports. She was the #1 KU basketball fan. She could tell you the stats of all her favorite players on the team. She was also a big Royals fan. Things she loved to do were fish, word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, bowling, card games, handwork of all kinds, making jewelry and anything outdoors. Her love for all God's Critters was strong. All the furry members of her family over the years were loved and cared for with much TLC.

Betty married Omer L. Johnson on February 9, 1940 in Manhattan, Kansas. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Dorothy Rose, Ruth Carlson and Hazel Hatfield.
Survivors include their children, Max Johnson, Charlotte Hastings, Stan Johnson, 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and her brother, Bob Rose. Her children were always lovingly encouraged and supported in any and all endeavors of their lives. Betty loved, loved, loved her grandchildren, near and far. She taught and shared with them many special things. Missi's favorite thing was collecting fireflies in a mason jar to take to bed and use as a night light many fun evenings on the front porch with her grandma. Korey's favorite was discovering his love of fishing that he still holds dear today as fishing is still a big part of his life. Kelli's favorite thing is to never overlook a patch of clover as there might be a four-leafed one there. She still finds many today. Keri's favorite thing was her hand embroidered red nosed scarecrow denim shirt. Every inch of the shirt was covered with hand stitching. She called him Randolph and wore it until it was threadbare. She still has it in a scrapbook to this day as it was made with so much love. Wes's favorite memory was to go fishing with his grandma. He was famous for getting his line tangled. Grandma was a wizard at un-tangling the rat's nest line and getting him fishing again. She always helped with such patients and love. Wade's favorite two memories of conversations with his grandma Betty were as follows; One after his first dog passed, his grandma told him that Mother Nature and Father Time heals all. The other was when dad and I would visit hunting quail. Watching Grandpa Omer and listening to his stories and then getting home at any hour, supper would be on the table. Grandma would care for us with TLC! She would even clean the birds we got and then serve dessert. What an outstanding and old school lady she was!

A heart felt thank you goes to Jean Anderson and Jean Massey for their assistance and TLC for our mother in the last year and a half. Many thanks to the group and nurses of Midland Care of Topeka.
