Byrl F. Mason of Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Girard, Kansas, passed away March 5, 2014 at his daughter's home. He was born on May 24, 1934 to Glen and Alice (Dugger) Mason at Weir, Kansas. He married Shirley A. McCarthy on March 26, 1977 at Topeka. They met through SEKCAP (Southeast Kansas Community Action Program).
When they moved to Topeka, he gained employment as a counter salesman at Carquest Auto Parts where he worked until his retirement. He became a member of the Pittsburg Masonic Lodge #187 in 1965. In Topeka, he served in the transportation unit of the Arab Shrine Temple. He was a licensed auctioneer and enjoyed fishing and camping. He was a great handy-man… duct tape works!
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Shirley; his son Byrl D. Mason of Ashland City, TN, daughter, Pamela Birkinshaw, son, John Owens, and daughter, Debra Christian, all of Topeka; 11 grandchildren;and 11 greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son Danny R. Mason on April 22, 1998, and his brother, Kenny R. Mason.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service at 11:00AM. Visitation will begin at 10:00AM prior to the service. Private inurnment will take place at Rochester Cemetery.
