Carol Elaine Schmidt

September 11, 1932 — March 14, 2015

Carol Schmidt, 82, of Topeka, was called to eternal peace on Saturday, March 14, 2015. She had been hospitalized for multiple health concerns which had dominated her life for some time. Carol was born September 11, 1932 in Kansas City, KS to Arthur and Crystal Stutz, who preceded her in death. Her immediate family, who were blessed by her love and care, includes her beloved husband of 34 years, Reverend Eugene E. Schmidt; her brother, Robert Stutz (Janet) of Shawnee Mission, KS; nieces, Susan Blackburn (Brett) of Topeka and Katy Franklin (Mike) of Topeka; great-nieces and nephews: Nikki and Michael Blackburn and Adam, Sarah, Mary Kate, Claire, and Luke Franklin.

She loved the children in her home: Stephen Schmidt (Jan) of Redondo Beach, CA, Sheryl Speelman (Joe) of Houston, TX, and Suzanne Peterson (Steve) of Andover, KS. Grandchildren include Eric Schmidt, Jenna Heinen (Kyle), Geoffrey and Katharina Speelman, and Britta and Max Peterson, and great-granddaughter Eden Heinen.

Carol graduated from the University of Kansas and was a Jayhawk super-fan. She excelled in athletics and academics while on the KU campus. She earned a Master's degree at KU and was in the process of earning a Doctorate in Geography when she moved to Topeka with her husband in 1980. Carol taught in the Kansas City, Kansas School District and was Board Secretary in her father's firm, Stutz and Company, until retirement.

She expressed her loving concern for people and service to her Lord and His Church through volunteering. She served on several Boards at her church, Prince of Peace, Topeka. She volunteered at Topeka Shawnee Public Library and Child Care Aware. She also served as the Treasurer of Ward-Meade and loved her time volunteering.

An avid reader, sports fan, a good friend, with a great sense of humor, Carol had an abiding faith in her Lord and Savior. Her favorite holiday was Easter. We thank our Heavenly Father for giving us Carol to love and share in our lives. The greatest gift our Heavenly Father has given her is an eternal peace in Heaven that "surpasses all understanding."

The family will greet friends this evening, Tuesday, March 17 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd., Topeka.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 3625 SW Wanamaker Rd., Topeka. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery in Topeka.
