Carol Lee Macdonald

Carol Lee Macdonald, 74, of Topeka, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 15, 2008.

She was born June 5, 1934 in Hutchinson, Kansas the daughter of Olen and Beryl (Burns) Laughlin. She graduated from Sterling High School, attended Hutchinson Junior College and graduated from Ottawa University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She attended Sterling College where she met her husband, James Craig Macdonald. They were married October 7, 1955 and recently celebrated 53 years together. She taught four years in Kansas City, Kansas and five years in Pima, Arizona.

She served as the first woman mayor of Safford, Arizona from 1984 to 1986. She was elected to two, four year terms on the Safford City Council after serving one appointed year. She resigned her council seat June 23, 1986 to seek a position in the Arizona Senate from District 8. She was elected and sworn in on January 12, 1987 to the Arizona State Senate. She campaigned with John McCain for their respective seats - she for the Arizona Senate and he for the U.S. Senate. She was co-owner of Best Drug Store in Safford. In 1991 Carol and Jim moved to Topeka, Kansas. She worked for the State Dental Board for eight years in Topeka until July 1999 when she retired.

She is survived by her husband, Jim of Topeka, KS; daughters, Colleen Carnivale of Olathe, KS, and Heather Flowers and her husband, Marty of Fort Worth, TX; her grandsons, William Barney and Zackary Flowers; her granddaughter, Caitlin Carnivale; her sister, Wanda Armstrong and husband, John of Wichita, KS; her brother, Ray Laughlin and wife, Joyce of Goodyear, AZ; her uncle, LaVerne Burns and wife, Mary of Hutchinson; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Saturday October 18, 2008 at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wannamaker Road, Topeka, KS 66610. Mrs. Macdonald will lie in state after 3 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 515 S. Kansas, Suite B-2, Topeka, KS 66603.
