Carol Jean Westerdale

January 3, 1958 — January 3, 2019

With great sadness the family announces the death of Carol Jean Westerdale of Topeka, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 3, 2019.

She was born in Spokane, Washington on November 13, 1958.

She grew up in England before settling in Topeka.

Carol provided accounting and bookkeeping services to many small businesses.

She was perhaps best known for her tireless efforts to save the lives of animals in shelters and in the wild. She founded Save Our Shelter Animals (SOSA), one of the first organizations in Topeka dedicated to the no-kill principle applied at shelters across the country.

Carol's heart was always in her roots in England. She returned to visit a number of times to indulge in her favorite activities of shopping and cream teas.

She was a familiar sight around Topeka, driving her corvette with the wind blowing through her long beautiful hair.

She is survived by her mother, Marlene J. Peterson, brother, Glen C. Peterson, both of Old Orchard Beach, ME, sister, Kim M. Peterson of Sanford, ME, son, Mark E. Westerdale of Dallas, TX, daughter, Jennifer M. Curtis of Germantown MD, grandchildren, Chase and Sydney, Topeka and Jacob Curtis, Germantown, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you keep Carol in your hearts by adopting shelter animals and helping strays with kindness and compassion.

Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel is assisting the family.
