Carolyn L. Platt

Carolyn Louise Platt, 83, of Topeka, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018.

She was born September 18, 1934, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Harold and Freda (Greer) Platt. She was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, TX. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Emporia State University and Master's Degree in Special Education from The University of Kansas.

Carolyn taught 24 years in schools in Shawnee, Monterey (CA), Silver Lake and Topeka, retiring from Capital City Schools in May 1998.

She was a member of the Kansas National Education Association, where she served on the Capital Uniserv Administrative Board. She served the National Education Association - Topeka as a building representative.

A proud member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority for sixty five years, she held various offices in their Topeka area alumnae group. She was also a member of Mothers' Club in Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Troop #7.

Her activities at Countryside United Methodist Church included teaching Sunday School, a caregiver for children with special needs, and as a Board Member of their BSA troop #69.

Survivors include three sons, Kevin A. Roepke, Overland Park, KS, Scott A. Roepke, Richmond, MO and Kirk B. Roepke, Euless, TX; and three sisters, Patricia Montgomery, Janette Moya, and Dianne Ott.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Freda (Greer) Platt.

Carolyn enjoyed plants and gardening, spending time with her three Westie dogs (Duff, Tassie, and Kenzie), visiting zoos, and summer weekends hosting guests at the family cabin on Lake Kahola near Emporia.

She was passionate about traveling and would spend months planning her next grand summer destination, both in the US and abroad. She loved experiencing new places, cultures, and food. She looked forward to beachcombing, deep-sea fishing, and visits to the Mexican market during annual Christmas holiday trips to South Padre Island, TX with close family and friends. Her favorite trip was to China in 2007 where she walked on The Great Wall and raved about the wonderful food she experienced.

Honoring her request, Carolyn was cremated. A memorial ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oklahoma Westie Rescue, 9810 E. 116th Street South, Bixby, OK 74008; OKWestieRescue.com/donations, in honor of Carolyn Platt.
