Carroll D. Ohlde

October 20, 1942 — October 17, 2017

Carroll Dean Ohlde, 74, passed on October 17, 2017 at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Carroll Dean Ohlde was born on October 20th, 1942 in Linn, Kansas, the son of Freida Alvina Ohlde and Albert Wilhelm Emil Ohlde.

Carroll grew up in Linn, Kansas with his two brothers, Fred and Den.

He received an Associate's degree in 1961 from St. John's in Winfield, KS, a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia College in Indiana in 1964, and a Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri in 1971.

He taught theology for several years as an ordained minister at the Lutheran Church at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon. He moved to Bloomington-Normal, Illinois to serve as the Lutheran Campus Minister and developed their campus ministry program. The program thrived under his leadership during the six years he was there and he was always very fond of his time with that program. Carroll went on to receive a Master of Arts from Illinois State University in 1975.

He married Carol Sue Niemeier in 1969. They had two children, Jonathan Carroll who was born on September 9, 1973, and Kirsten Carol who was born on April 6, 1976.

Carroll and his family relocated to Lawrence, Kansas to pursue a Doctorate degree from the University of Kansas in Counseling Psychology, which he received in 1981.

Carroll was hired by the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Topeka and worked there for 34 years, retiring in 2013. During that time he was instrumental in developing the inpatient Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) program and was the first chief of that unit. He also was the primary leader for the integration of the Topeka and Leavenworth campuses. He received various promotions, awards, and recognition of service over the years, serving as the Chief of Psychology for many years, and was the Manager of Behavioral Services when he retired. He absolutely loved working with and for the veterans, feeling honored that he could assist them. He was also able to stay active in the ministry during these years.

He married Susan Mary Krieshok on May 17, 1991 and became a step-parent to her three sons-Benjamin Paul, Aaron Thomas, and Gabriel James. The family enjoyed many wonderful years together. Carroll and Sue loved to visit the ocean, support KU sports, and enjoy family, friends, and their pets. The family was able to take trips together and particularly appreciated their time spent together during the last four years. Carroll also enjoyed landscaping the yard and employed his signature work-hard ethic to make and keep it beautiful.

In his final years, Carroll battled with Alzheimer's Disease, which he approached with dignity, compassion, and grace throughout -- as he approached all things in life.

He is survived by his two younger brothers and their wives -- Frederick Albert Ohlde and Janet Grace Ohlde and Dennis Allen Ohlde and Debra Muriel Ohlde. He is survived by his children, step-children, daughter-in-law Jinae Barney Krieshok, and eight wonderful grandchildren.
