Cecil D. Shafer, 91, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. Born August 16, 1924 at Dexter, Kansas, he was the son of Robert "Mike" and Minnie D. (Rush) Shafer.
Cecil received his education in the Dexter schools, graduating in 1943 and attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.
Cecil served in the Army Air Corps in the 507th Fighter Group in the Pacific during WWII. He was employed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad as a Locomotive Engineer for 39 years before retiring in 1985. Cecil was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the Dexter Masonic Lodge No. 156, Philip Billard Post No. 1650, V.F.W. in Topeka, American Legion Post No. 10 in Winfield and the Kuntry Kuzzins Square Dance Club.
Cecil married Ena Belle Nugen. She preceded him in death on February 14, 1988. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his sister Leota Martin; and his brothers, Forrest Shafer, Robert Shafer, Donald Shafer, John Shafer, Jack Shafer and Vernon Shafer. Cecil was also preceded in death by his companion, Audrey Fellman.
Survivors include his son, Derek Shafer of Topeka, five grandchildren, Kerri Holtzman (Dave), Zack Shafer (Ashlee), Andrew Shafer (Alison), Kelsie Shafer and Jake Shafer, five great-grandchildren, Will, Julia, Thomas, Caroline and Charlie and a sister, Melva Ruth Hobbs of Arkansas City, Kansas.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2016 in Dexter Cemetery in Dexter, Kansas.
