Charles Arthur "Skippy" Comneck, 82, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at a local care center.
Charles was born October 12, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Casimir and Edna May (Kogler) Comneck.
He served as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, receiving the Good Conduct medal, Korean Service medal with 2 battle star campaigns and the U.N. Service Medal for a mission in Guam.
He was employed as a foreman in the Shipping/Receiving department of Halbro for 30 years, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the V.F.W.
Charles was a lifelong learner who took many night classes at college to further his knowledge and practice of horticulture and animal husbandry. He was an avid reader who was a self taught man. He learned to become a great chef. Other hobbies included hunting, fishing, running and auto mechanics. He lived life through action; he was a doer who instilled in his children a strong sense of self-sufficiency. He loved the Tuesday Margarita Club, spending time with his grandchildren and chasing the love of his life, Helen whom he met at Sperling's Meat Market as a young butcher.
Charles married Helen Mary Rivezzo on March 11, 1950 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Brooklyn, NY. She died December 3, 2008. Survivors include their children, Peter Comneck, Port Jefferson, NY; Helen (Pat) Comneck, Holtsville, NY; Sue (Ray) Dattilo, Topeka; Mark (Debbie) Comneck, Lake Jackson, TX; Richie (Nadia) Holder, Spring Valley, NY; Tina (Steven) Naeder, Indialantic, FL; Grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, David, Ali, Devon, Maggie, Charles and Richena; and sister, Joan Smith of New York. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Comneck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Private inurnment with Military honors will take place at Leavenworth National Cemetery. A Parish Rosary will initiate the visitation that will be held between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road.
