Charles E. Putnam

Charles (Charlie) E. Putnam, 88, of Carbondale, passed away, surrounded by his family on Friday, August 6, 2010 at Midland Hospice. He was born on March 2, 1922 in Elmo, KS to John Harrison and Mary Josephine (Davenport) Putnam.

Charlie graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence, KS in 1940. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII in the South Pacific on various destroyers, including the USS Mississippi. After the war he graduated from Clark's Business College. He married Marie M. Rothberger on July 6, 1946 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Eudora, KS. Charlie attended International Correspondence School in Scranton, PA where he received his degree in drafting and machine design in 1949. He was a freight car inspector for the Santa Fe Railroad for 35 years. Charlie was a charter member of Christ The King Catholic Church, a member of the Topeka model airplane club, he volunteered at Capper Foundation where he transported children to Sunday mass, he was an usher at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, he was the first president of the Wagonear Camping Club and was a Santa Fe Railroad union member.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Putnam of the home; their three children, Dr. Julie K. Putnam of Carbondale, Dr. Michael C. Putnam of Topeka and Lori M. Vawter and her husband Rick of Wakarusa, KS; one grandson Andy Vawter of Wakarusa, KS; and one brother Raymond Putnam of Ontario, OR. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Vinnal, Johnny, Clifford, Don, Jack and Darold and one sister Ellen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at Christ The King Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Putnam will lie in state after 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 9 at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 9 at the funeral home with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ The King Catholic Church, 5973 SW 25th, Topeka, KS 66614, The American Cancer Society 1315 SW Arrowhead Rd, Topeka, KS 66604 or Midland Care Hospice Services, 200 SW Frazier Cir, Topeka, KS 66606.
