Charles Emmett Fryman

April 23, 1914 — April 28, 2014

Charles Emmett "Mutt" Fryman, born 1914 died peacefully on April 28, 2014 at age 100. He was born at home at 344 W 11th St, Horton, KS, and attended St Leo's parochial school grades 1-12, graduating May, 1931. He married Jean Speece Sept 28, 1939, who died November 2013. This year would have been their 75th wedding anniversary.

He is survived by his sons Stephen (Ursula) of Wichita, KS; Nicholas of Los Angeles, CA; Timothy of Chicago, IL; and his daughters Judith (Ron) and Susan (Dennis) of Topeka KS. He enjoyed his 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Emmett and his family were members of St Leo's Catholic Church. Emmett was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, joining St. Leo's Council #834 in March 1935.
Emmett worked 3 years at the Smith & Lindsey drug store through high school then as a file clerk in the accounting office of the Rock Island Railroad. In October of 1933, he was employed by the Horton Post Office. With time out to serve in World War II, he retired June 30, 1973 as Officer in Charge.

During the 1960's, Emmett was the first Civil Defense Director in Horton. After retiring, he served as Vice Chairman of the Local Housing Authority, a Director on the Tri-County Manor Board, Treasurer of the Horton Library, a member of VISTA, Treasurer of Horton PRIDE and on several of Horton's ad-hoc committees.

Emmett and Jean wintered in Harlingen, Texas for 30 years. During that time, Emmett volunteered at the Harlingen Public Library, receiving the Library Service Award in 2001. He and Jean also tutored at the local grade school in Harlingen.

He will be deeply missed and remembered by his family and many friends whom he held dear over the last 100 years.
