Charles G. Long, Jr.

Charles G. Long, Jr., passed away at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center on Sunday, May 29. He was born August 28, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Charles G. and Ruth M. (Bowen) Long.

Charles graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1948, attended the University of Kansas and Washburn University. He served in the US Air Force from 1951 to 1955 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant through the USAF Aviation Cadet Program, serving with the 64th and 84th Fighter Interceptor Squadrons. He returned to Washburn University, graduating in 1957, and joined the National Bank of Topeka as a management trainee. In 1991, he retired from Bank IV as senior vice president.

He married Janise Myers on May 25, 1952, in Oskaloosa, Kansas. They had observed their 59th anniversary on Wednesday.

Charles was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, VFW Post 1650, and the Arab Shrine. A long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, Topeka, he served as an Elder and a Trustee. He also served as treasurer of the Kansas Children's Service League and the United Way, and was on the Board of Directors of Jayhawk Council and Boy Scout of America.

In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by a son, Mark G. (Dawn) Long, Newbury Park, California, and a daughter, Susan B. (Clifton) Askren, Holton, Kansas; five grandchildren, Steven A. Younger and Shawn C. Younger of Topeka, Kristen R. Long, San Diego, CA, Christopher C. Long, Newbury Park, CA, and Spencer T. Younger, Berryton; two step grandchildren, Jamie Askren, Circleville, and Kasey Askren, Netawaka; and a step great-granddaughter, Emma Kay Bellinghausen.

Memorial services are at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church, Topeka. Private inurnment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka. The family suggests donations to the Building Restoration Fund, First Presbyterian Church, 817 SW Harrison, Topeka, KS 66612. Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, Topeka, is assisting the family with arrangements.
