Chester R. Todd, 75, of Dover, KS, went home to be with the Lord Friday, April 25, 2014 surrounded by his family at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
He was born August 9, 1938 at home near Dover, Kansas, the son of Charles C. and Nora Mae (Rogers) Todd. He was a 1956 graduate of Dover High School. He served in the Army National Guard.
Mr. Todd farmed in the Dover area for many years. After retiring from farming, he served as director of maintenance at Memorial Hospital, Topeka. Chester and his brother, Arthur later purchased Kansas Air Service, selling the business in 2002. Most recently he worked in the maintenance department at Tower Metal Works and later for McCrites Retirement Community.
He was a life-time member of the Dover Federated Church, Dover, KS where he served on the church board and was a Sunday School Superintendent. He also served on the USD 330 Unified School Board, the board of RWD 2 in Wabaunsee County and was a 4-H leader.
Chester married Judy A. Kull on March 29, 1959 at the Dover Federated Church. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Doris J. (Mark) Nichols, Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren, William Charles Buchan and Ann May Buchan (fiancé, Scott Williams), both of Topeka; ex-son-in-law, Dennie Buchan; and four siblings, Margaret Ann Briant, Topeka, David (Benalea) Todd, Floyd Todd and Philip Todd, all of Dover; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Elnora Todd; a sister, Zelma Rathje, her husband, Martin; a brother, Arthur Todd and his wife, Cleota and a brother-in-law Elton Briant.
Chester's greatest joy in life came from serving others through his knowledge and hard work. He loved gardening, woodworking and fixing things, especially at his granddaughter's new home. He also enjoyed Sunday rides on his motorcycle.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Dover Federated Church, Dover, KS. Burial will follow in the Dover Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, at the Dover Fellowship Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Dover Federated Church, P.O. Box 107, Dover, KS 66420. Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel is assisting the family.
