Chester R. "Chet" Turner, 92, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Midland Hospice House. He was born June 18, 1921 near Garnett, KS, the son of Raleigh and Ruth Raymond Turner.
Chester married Jeannette Lloyd on January 23, 1942 in Kincaid, KS. They lived on a farm near Berryton for many years. She preceded him in death on March 11, 2013.
Chester worked for a pipeline company in Olathe, KS, Salt Lake City, Utah, Houston, TX and Amherst, TX before being drafted into the U.S. Army for 3 ½ years. He served during WWII in North Africa and Italy. He was seriously wounded in North Africa and received a Purple Heart. After the war, he lived in Topeka and worked at Forbes Air Field and Jordan Sunbeam Bakery. He then attended training and became a licensed electrician with IBEW Local 226 which he was a member of for over 60 years and served as the business agent for 9 years before retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Patsy (Jim) Jones of Netawaka, KS, one son, Dale (Wanda) Turner of Berryton, five grandchildren, Jason and Travis Jones and Becky and Ryan Turner, Jessica Lehman, fourteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his sister, Janice Turner and his sister-in-law, Geri Turner, both of Scottsdale, AZ.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery southeast of Topeka. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
