Clementine Theodorine Schoovaerts

June 12, 1925 — February 2, 2018

Clementine Theodorine (De Mey) Schoovaerts, 92, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away February 2, 2018. She was born in Brussels, Belgium on June 12, 1925, to Jean and Josephine (Suetens) De Mey. She attended public school in Brussels until the schools were closed due to the war.

Soon after the war, she married Henri Schoovaerts on September 22, 1945 in Brussels. Clementine and Henri started their family of 8 children; four sons: Jean Jacques "James", Louis Alain, Marc, and Francis; and four daughters: Claudine, Nicole, Eveline and Jacqueline. Through the years, their family grew to include 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Because of Clementine's loving heart, she also considered Guy Wets as a son.

Henri and Clementine immigrated to the United States in 1971 along with four of their children. Two of the older children followed later. They lived several years in Topeka and moved to Clovis, New Mexico in 1975, only to return to Topeka in 1988. Clementine was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She would often make special handmade gifts for her family members and made it a point to never forget anyone's birthday. She had a special love of music and dancing. You could often hear her humming her favorite tunes and seemed to always have a song in her heart.

She had a great love for her husband, Henri who preceded her in death in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Caroline "Lina" Van Dessel and Rosaline "Rosa" Van Elder both of Belgium, and her eldest son, Jean Jacques "James" Schoovaerts of Topeka.

Clementine is survived by Louis Alain of Belgium, Claudine Schoovaerts of Belgium, Nicole and Jean Pierre Vanhollebeke of Topeka, Marc Schoovaerts of Albuquerque, NM, Francis Schoovaerts and Chuck Annis of Topeka, Eveline and Ken Baker of Weatherford, TX, Jacqueline Schoovaerts Dassler of Albuquerque, NM, Guy Wets of Belgium, all of their children and grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law, Marcella Swenson of Sacramento, CA.

A memorial service will be held later this spring or summer. Interment beside Henri will be at Topeka Cemetery.
