Colonel William "Bill" R. Singer, 71, of Topeka, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2015 at a Topeka hospital after a brief illness. He was born August 6, 1943 in Syracuse, NY, the son of George and Helene Reynolds Singer.
He graduated from St. Peter's College in Jersey City, NJ, where he played Division 1 basketball.
Bill enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1965 and served two tours during the Vietnam War. He retired after 24 years of service. In 1996, he was hired by Shawnee County to consolidate the 911 Emergency System. Bill also ran Information Technology for Shawnee County until retiring in 2008. After retiring, he was a substitute teacher at Washburn Rural High School.
He married Jane "J.T." Thompson on October 11, 1991 in Kansas City, MO. She survives. Other survivors include his children, Jody (Tracy) Allen, William Singer, Becky (Alex) Matos, Madison Singer, Michael Singer, seven grandchildren and his five siblings. Bill was preceded in death by his son, Bryan and his parents, George and Helene.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Christ The King Catholic Church. Cremation will follow the service and private inurnment will take place at a later date. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2015 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel. Bill will lie in state and the family will receive friends following the Rosary until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
