Daniel M. Corbett

August 12, 1947 — May 24, 2017

Daniel McKay Corbett of Winchester, KS passed away May 24, 2017 from lung cancer. He was born in Redwood Falls, MN on August 12th, 1947. His family of 10 moved to Scottsdale, AZ where he grew up.

He joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971. He received several Medals of Honor for his service. The one that meant the most was his Purple Heart. He was initially awarded it while he was in the service, but refused. He had heard about soldiers who were awarded the Purple Heart, only to have had it sent directly to their parents. When the soldier's parents received it, they interpreted it as their child's death in service, and were devastated. He did not want that to happen to his mother. He finally accepted his Purple Heart in May of 2007.

Dan retired from Jack Cooper Transport, Kansas City, MO, where he worked as a car hauler for 30 years. After retirement he attended Washburn Tech in Topeka where he earned an associate degree in Graphic Design. He also spent time as a substitute teacher for the Topeka Public School system. Dan also volunteered his time to the Veterans Administration.

Dan was a man who loved nature. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and loved watching his pigeons; usually with a cup of coffee in his hand. He never passed up a church bake sale. Corbett was generous to a fault, and those who knew him were often on the receiving end. He was a well-loved unforgettable character. He passionately protected his family and felt his main mission in life was to help them succeed. One of his regrets was that he couldn't remember or pronounce the Latin words for plants.

He is survived by Mary Corbett (1st wife of 10 years), and Susie Corbett (current wife of 40 years); his children, Carrie Winn, of Oklahoma; Joseph, and Robert Corbett, of Topeka; sisters, Sally (Ed) Reed, Mimi (Steve) Mack, Nancy (Ron) Davis, and Molly Macchiaroli, all of Arizona; brothers John and Richard Reed, of Minnesota; three grandchildren, Ashley and Chase, of Oklahoma, and Michael of Topeka. He is preceded in death by his parents, Audrey and Wyman Corbett, of Arizona; and a brother, Michael.

Dan Corbett will be buried in Redwood Falls, MN on August 12, 2017, with military honors.

His family requests that memorial contributions in his honor be made to the Jefferson County Health Department Home Health & Hospice, 1212 Walnut, Oskaloosa, KS, 66066.
