David Allen Gowan, 56, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017, at his home.
David was born July 22, 1960, in Albany, GA, to Allen and Margaret (King) Gowan. When David was 5 years old, his family moved to Topeka. He graduated in 1978 from Mission Valley High School and in 1982 received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Washburn University. In June 1986, he began working for the Sheriffs' Office. In 2001, he was promoted to sergeant and retired in September 2011. He also worked part-time for the Silver Lake and Auburn police departments and as a school security officer for Auburn-Washburn 437. David loved to fish, weather watch, and storm chase. He also enjoyed wood working, working in the garage, and most of all he loved his kids, grandkids, and his dogs.
He was preceded in death by his father.
David is survived by his mother; three children, Heather Weston, Jeremy Gowan, and Kelsey Gowan; five grandchildren; and sister, Pat Gowan.
A memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka, KS. The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
David was cremated and will be scattered at Lake Wabaunsee.
