David James Dewey Mackay, 67, Auburn, KS, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2015.
David was born May 19, 1947 in San Francisco, CA, the son of James D. and Elda L. (Piepenbrink) Mackay. He graduated from Parkview High School in Springfield, MO and Southwest Missouri State in 1970.
He was the Assistant Director of the Southwest Missouri State Campus Union until 1989, and then moved to Olathe and worked for Woodland Shutters from 1990 to 2007. He then owned his own business, Midwest Shutters until 2011. He later became a founding partner of The Tasteful Olive of Topeka.
He was actively involved with NACA (National Association of Campus Activities) as well as a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. He had a passion for music and was an avid reader.
David married Melinda Glenn-Tharp on December 29, 1984 in Springfield, MO. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Sherri Mackay, Springfield, MO, Cindy (Mike) Koile Penn, Charleston, SC; son, Jeff Tharp, Auburn, KS; grandchildren, Landon Looney, Austin and Blake Koile, Jake Tharp; mother, Elda Mackay, Springfield, MO; brother, Jay Mackay, Lenexa, KS; and sister, Lurline McCorry, Albuquerque, NM. He was preceded in death by his father, James Mackay; and son, Brian Tharp.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker, Topeka. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the chapel. A second funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2015 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lockwood, MO. Burial will follow that service in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Meinert, Missouri.
