David L. Walters

David L. Walters, 67, passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Stormont Vail Hospital surrounded by family as he fought lung cancer.

He was born June 14, 1944 in Holdrege, NE, the son of Lester and Erma B. Gentry Walters, and had resided in Topeka, KS for the past three years.
Dave was raised in Beloit, and graduated from Beloit High School in 1962, and from Fort Hays State Teachers College with a degree in education. Throughout Dave's life he was a devoted educator serving several schools districts (Lyons, Johnson City, Moundridge, Valley Heights, Cuba Hillcrest, and Riverton) and touched the lives of many. Dave was employed for the past three years by Greenbush Education Service Center. Dave was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Life member of Blue Rapids Post #0169 American Legion, and had been involved with Rotary, Big Brothers Big Sisters, American/Kansas Association of School Administrators, United School Administrators, and was a long-time supporter of Kansas Association of School Boards. He served in the United States Army in Germany during the Vietnam War.

He married Evelyn Becker on June 10, 1966 in Germany. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline (Kevin) Coggins of Waterville and Lesley (Harry) Brown of Overland Park; a son, Drew (Stacia) Walters of Olathe; five grandchildren, Lindsey, Cassidy and Cole Coggins and Harrison and Elizabeth Brown; a brother Dean (Debbie) Walters of Beloit; two nieces, Tara (Jason) Miner and children, and Heather (Luke) Cashett and children, and a nephew, Darren Walters.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Dave will lie in state after noon Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel where a parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m., and the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m.
