David Luke Shannon, 68, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2015. He was born September 16, 1946, in Rochester, New York, the son of Forrest and Beatrice (Forkell) Shannon. Growing up, David lived in New York, Ohio, West Virginia and New Jersey.
After graduating from high school in 1965, David enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the Army from 1965 until 1973, earning the rank of Master Sergeant. While in the Army, David's job was working on missiles, and therefore was stationed at Air Force bases in the States; he spent 3 years in Germany and 13 months in Korea.
David worked in the security offices at the Topeka Juvenile facility (YCAT) for 23 years, retiring in January 2009 at the rank of Sergeant.
He was a member of his professional union, Most Pure Heart of Mary Church and the American Legion Post #400. He enjoyed coin collecting, stamp collecting and ink pen collecting.
David is survived by his mother, Thelma Shannon; sister, Leah E. Cappaletti and her husband Tony; niece, Leanne Houser and her husband, David; great-niece, Victoria Houser and great nephew, Christopher Houser. He was preceded in death by his father, Forrest Raymond Shannon.
David was cremated. A memorial ceremony will be held at 2:00 pm., Thursday, April 23, 2015, at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service, 4020 S.W. 6th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66606. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle Topeka, KS 66606.
