David Erle May, born on November 24, 1969, in Topeka, Kansas, passed away on January 12, 2025, in his home, joining his beloved mother, Reva Nell, in Heaven. He is now with Jesus and is completely whole! A beloved member of his community and family, David's life was marked by his strong spirit and calm demeanor, traits that endeared him to those around him.
David is survived by his father, Robert May and his wife Sue Ayers-May; his sister, Mary and her husband, Marshall Kennedy; and his nieces, Kelly Kennedy and Emily Kennedy. He was preceded in death by his mother, Reva Nell May and his grandparents Mary and Frank King and Clyde and Winifred May. David's gentle spirit and pleasant outlook on life will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. His legacy of composure, mildness, and connection will continue to resonate in the hearts of his family and friends.
David began at TARC Services in 1971 and continued with them through present day. He has been a part of numerous activities and experiences including walking exercises in the therapy pool, cookouts, trips to the circus, rides to see cars, outdoor walks, trips to the zoo, watching iPad pictures of cars, ice cream runs and spending time with his peers. David’s father, Robert, was a board member for TARC from 1975-1980. His parents were long-times advocates for individuals with disabilities. David’s sister, Mary, in particular, learned much from their mother through her ability to be vocal for the needs and desires of David. David and Mary are deeply grateful for the examples of their parents.
In 1980 David moved to KNI, Kansas Neurological Institute, in Topeka, to live. David graduated from the KNI Special School in 1991. Also 1991 David began to live in a community setting with Sheltered Living Inc, now known as SLI. David was part of one of the first groups of individuals to move into the community through the IDD Waiver as part of Medicaid services. His family is immensely grateful for funding provided that has allowed for living arrangements and staffing through the years. During his time there, he enjoyed the company of others, activities and outings, and forming meaningful connections that brought joy to his daily life.
Memories of him are cherished by many, particularly as a strong-willed German, as his sister often referred to him. His father often mentioned how he was a good judge of character. David had an excellent way of communicating with his eyes and facial expressions and his nieces and brother-in-law often noticed this. The family has thoroughly enjoyed visits to TARC and SLI over the years and spending time with others involved in David’s life.
David had a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures of life. He was known for his love of water, from being in a pool as a child all the way to water therapy as an adult. When he was young he could be found sitting in a bean bag. One night of the week he needed to hear the opening song of “All in the Family” before he headed to bed. He is remembered for the huge grin he had on his face as he listened. He always needed to have a chosen special fidget in hand. He enjoyed listening to music and his fondness for culinary treats was well-known; throughout his life he enjoyed dinner rolls, Jello salads, ice cream and protein shakes. As a child he attended church at First Southern Baptist Church, Topeka, and then chapel at KNI.
There is no possible way to list everyone who has made an impact on both David’s life and the family’s life over his fifty-five years. The family wants to specifically thank Dwight and Ken who have been with David at SLI since the early 1990’s. Dr. Karen Bruce and her staff have been especially helpful to him over the years as his primary care provider. And the family is immensely grateful for Angie and Ashley who were with David when he passed. Kindness and love shows in their work and they will always be remembered.
Romans 1:17: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” Our perfect gift from God has now joined him in Heaven. There can be joy in sadness and we have peace in knowing we will see him again.
In lieu of flowers memorials contributions can be given to SLI and TARC both organizations David was actively involved in for the majority of his life.
