Dean William Greig

May 28, 1944 — December 15, 2016

Dean William Greig passed away at age 72 on Thursday, December 15th in Topeka, Kansas. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Alice M. Greig and their two children, Alex (wife, Stacey) and Bryan (wife, Kristin); 5 grandchildren: Lawson, Marcus, Addison, Regan, and Alessa.

Dean was born on May 28, 1944 in Beloit, Kansas to Davey and Merrida (Jemison) Greig. He was the only child and spent his childhood helping on the family farm. The Greig and Jemison families were large families, so Dean had many cousins whose company he was glad to keep and those cousins enjoyed the company of Dean. Dean graduated in 1962 from Osborne High School. He then attended college at Fort Hays University in Hays, Kansas. Dean followed in his father's footsteps and became a Rancher/Farmer. Over the years, Dean also drove a cattle truck, became a custom cutter/bailer, and was employed by the State of Kansas. Dean prized the business of ranching and raising "Black Bally" cattle.

He married Alice Mae Storer on July 28, 1969 in Osborne, Kansas. Dean, Alice, Alex and Bryan lived in Osborne. Dean was not an avid sports fan until his sons became involved in sports. He had a special interest in watching his sons compete, and he especially enjoyed watching them in wrestling.

In 1999, Dean was diagnosed with throat cancer. He was given a pessimistic and grave prognosis of his future. Dean decided to fight and survive. For the next 17 years, he made it happen. He was able to be there when both sons were married, and got the chance to know and to love his 5 grandchildren.

Dean had many friends, was well thought of by the community and his word was his bond. He enjoyed a joke, loved to laugh, and loved to make people laugh.
In 2013, he and Alice moved to Topeka to be closer to his sons and their families. Being with the grandchildren was a special time for Dean. He was glad to be at their school events or athletic events. Dean liked people and people liked Dean. He was a lifelong Democrat and member of the Methodist Church. Family, friends, and people that knew Dean will miss him. He will be remembered for what he was, a good man.

A celebration of Dean's life will be held Tuesday, December 20th at the Methodist Church in Osborne Kansas at 11:00 am, with a dinner following in the Methodist Fellowship hall. Memorial donations in Dean's memory may be made to Harvesters, The Community Food Network, www.harvesters.org
