Delbert C. Tibbets, 87, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at his home.
He was born September 22, 1924 in Ogallala, NE, the son of Carl and Luella Johnson Tibbets. He graduated from Seaman High School. He was a Navy veteran of WWII. Delbert was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for 37 years before retiring. He was a member of Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion, the Moose Club and the United Rubber Workers Local No. 307. He was an avid bowler, golfer and gold prospector.
Delbert married Betty J. Doane on April 9, 1947. She preceded him in death on March 7, 1999. He later married Mary Mae Moffet on November 19, 2005 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on February 18, 2010. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Roxanne Baldwin on November 9, 2009 and one grandson, Errick Baldwin in 1998.
Survivors include four children, Carl Tibbets of Edmond, OK, Katheryn Stark of Quenemo, Emmet Tibbets of Berryton and Daniel Tibbets of Topeka and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Burial will follow in Lynn Creek Cemetery southeast of Topeka. Delbert will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Midland Care Hospice Services, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606 or Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 NW Rochester Rd., Topeka, KS 66617 or to the organization of the donor's choice.
