Dick Scott Varner, 85, of Berryton passed away peacefully at the VA Medical Center in Topeka, Saturday, December 1, 2018 He was the son of the late Orville Varner & Jennie May (Scott) Varner.
Dick grew up on a farm in Lyndon, Ks. He attended the one room "Jack Rabbit School" in Lyndon and graduated from Lyndon High School in 1951. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953-1956. He completed mechanic school while serving in the Marine Corps. He had fond memories of serving in the Marine Corps and often talked about those times as being the best time of his life. He worked for KDOT as a mechanic for nearly 30 years before taking an early retirement, but he tried to keep busy "tinkering" around with various projects.
Dick married his wife, Phyllis Lundquist on February 5, 1959. She preceded him in death in 2010. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, John, Carl, Ralph and Willis; 5 sisters, Ellen, Irene, Betty, Goldie and his unnamed twin.
Survivors include his son Richard Varner and daughter Jennie Varner; two grandchildren, Justin Walker and Whitney Braun and his sister, Velma Doyle.
Dick will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. Graveside services will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Lynn Creek Cemetery in Berryton, 1/2 mile east of the intersection of SE California & 61st streets.
