Dion Dale Luekenga, 76, of Topeka, formerly of Grand Island, Nebraska, passed away January 6, 2015. He was born on May 18, 1938 at Wamego, Kansas to John Harry and Julia Anna (Pittenger) Luekenga.
He was raised in Topeka, Kansas, attend Highland Park schools and graduated from Highland Park High School in 1956. He joined the US Navy to serve his country aboard the USS Jason (AR-8) . He served actively from 1955-1957, and completed his military service in the Naval Reserve until 1961. Dion was employed by Sears Roebuck, Co. as a retail salesman. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing.
Dion is survived by his children, Craig Luekenga of Topeka, Kirk Luekenga of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Tobin Guerrero of Chapman, Nebraska; granddaughter Torrie Quinlan of Cairo, Nebraska; grandson Colton Guerrero of Grand Island, Nebraska; ex-wife Reuby Melendez of Topeka; sister Sherry Gonzales of Topeka; sister-in-law Dorrie Luekenga of St. Cloud, Florida; nieces, Dawn Houghton of Topeka, Shelley Baker of Port Lavaca, Texas and Melissa Hartzell of Topeka; and his nephew James McDonald of Topeka. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Gary Luekenga.
A memorial service and inurnment will take place at Kansas Veteran's Cemetery at Ft. Riley at a later date.
